Living in the Shadow of Beethoven

Welcome to the 28th Season of Musical Offerings concerts! The opening concert, Sunday, January 15 at 3:00 PM, is an exciting event in the citywide Beethoven Festival sponsored by the San Antonio Symphony.

In some sources the time and place of the concert were listed incorrectly. The starting time of the concert is 3:00 pm (not 2:00 pm) and the location is Christ Episcopal Church.

By including music of composers like Schubert, Hummel and Brahms, Musical Offerings offers you a refreshing insight into the music of Beethoven and its relationship to his contemporaries of the 18th and 19th century.

Piano Trio No. 5 in D major “Ghost” and musical gems of Beethoven’s contemporaries Hummel, Schubert, Dussek, Mendelssohn and Brahms.

In the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art galleries of the museum, the audience will sit among the ancient Egyptian reliefs, Greek vases and Roman statues while hearing the stories of these characters through glorious Baroque music. All instruments are authentic period Baroque instruments.

In stories sung by soprano, Angela Malek, Cleopatra laments her imprisonment, the Furies are summoned to predict the fate of Orpheus and Fortune and Virtue compete with Amor for the outcome in the immoral affair of Nero and Poppea.

Vocal works are excerpted from Handel’s Julius Caesar, Purcell’s Orpheus and Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea, in addition to instrumental music by John Blow and Christoph Gluck.

A light reception will be provided between performances.
